Oakland 000 00 0-1 6 0 Boston 000 100 00 00 1-261 Dressage event hits show ring The Telegraph-Journal HAMPTON The Atlantic Regional Dressage Championships, sponsored by Fundy Cable will take place this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Gallaway Ridge Training Centre here.
There will be between 20 and 25 competitors from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. attending the event, said publicist Ceci Flanagan. Flanagan herself will be competing at the Basic: II level with her horse Overdraft. The classes range from Basic I through Basic IV and Medium IV. Championships will be determined at the Basic II, Basic IV and Medium IV levels, Flanagan explained.
Basic I is novice, either the rider or horse is new to dressage. What the judges look for in that level is the rhythm in the movements and accuracy in the test, which is somewhat like figure skating. The movements are quite large. The horse has to complete a circle the size of half the arena. "The higher the level, the smaller the circles or movements.
Each level is a preparation for the subsequent level," she said. Riders may enter in the junior (under 18) or senior levels. Admission is The roots of dressage lie in the military around the 1800s, when cavalry members would perform to show how well-trained their horses were. "It takes about four to five hours preparation for 10 minutes in the ring," Flanagan laughed. The stables house 35 horses plus 39 box stalls set up during the summer for various shows.
The organizer of the equestrian event is Alison Gallagher, who also owns Gallaway Ridge.
